Fuel Quality

Do I have an eating disorder? That one is easy answer... NO.

Am I concious of everything I put in my mouth? YES (but I don't think that is a bad thing).

It's very important for anyone just starting to work out to really push their physical limits... but there is more to weight loss then just moving more you need to ensure you eat healthy too.

I give props to Devin and Gina because they kept me on track on the physical movement side over the last 2 years... in addition to that... they definitely gave me suggestions on different meal options and Gina and I are always swapping healthy recipes... but it was up to me to take control of my food intake and start monitoring my own food choices and portions.

Too many people try a new fitness routine but don't modify how they are eating. Most likely if you are overweight... food is part of the issue so don't neglect to evaluate that aspect because you can workout all you want but if the fuel you give your body is carbs and sugar instead of protein and fiber... you probably aren't going to see results.

I'm not a nutritionist but I do have common sense. I don't count calories but I do monitor my portion sizes (except for raw veggies... I consume as much as I can especially greens like broccoli). Though frozen food is convenient... I always choose fresh boneless chicken over packaged frozen chicken (when possible)... I rarely eat red meat and when I do it's a high cut grade (even though we know a marbly steak is great at a bbq). On the occasion... do I ever eat frozen chicken or steak? Yes! There are going to be times where convenience or a treat of bbq steak superseed how I'm fueling my body for training purposes... if I didn't then I'd probably consider myself to have an eating disorder. Everything in moderation!

I do eat off of children size bowls and plates now because honestly... that's all the food I need. I eat about 5 small meals a day, get plenty of quality protein and veggies... it would be impossible for me to have kept up the 8-10 hour a week workout routines if I didn't eat regularly and healthy.

Over the last couple of years a couple when close friends have privately voiced concerns, asking me straight out if I have an eating disorder. I may have when I was overweight... but I definitely don't now that I exercise. I'll admit, I am very aware now of the foods that I now consume and sometimes decide not to eat something because of it lacks little to no nutritional value for my body. I do however "live a little" every week but when I do it's in moderation. If I have ice cream, I'll have 1/2 cup instead of 2 cups... 1 piece of pizza instead of 3 pieces... at kids birthday parties I still indulge in a piece of cake but I don't want a corner piece with tons of icing and I won't be going back for seconds (even if it's homemade)... but I used to!

You will notice a huge difference in your ability to exercise vigorously if you feed your body quality fuel... so if you are exercising and finding little results... make sure you are eating to fuel your body.
