Slow and steady wins the race...
This is me... in happier times... when I could run! *hahaha*I'm into week two without running... by Wednesday the pain in my hip had pretty much disappeared. I went to bootcamp on Wednesday and had no problems at all. Probably because we are in a smaller space... so it's more of a stationary workout... push-ups, planks, squats, triceps, etc. I attended two classes of hot yoga and felt fabulous... did bike intervals three days with no strain on my hip and then had two weight training sessions with Gina and we really pushed ourselves... and though Gina (aka G-PAIN) killed my delts, shoulders and calves... my hip felt great. For tonights bootcamp... we were in the large gym and the thrill of being able to run again (and the uncontrollable urge to beat Paula to the end of the gym) got the better of me!
The class started off fabulous... to warm up... we were doing some light jogging and I felt great... I was smiling from ear-to-ear thinking about how good it felt to do be able do a light jog again (completely free of hip pain)... but then we started sprints. After about our 5th sprint to the end of the gym... I was pretty jacked that I had beat Paula to the end on one length (because she's freakin' fast)... I must have got a jump start on her when we bounced up from the push-up sets because I never beat her. Anyway, when we turned to run back to the other end of the gym (to our starting position) she took the turn quick, got ahead of me so I cranked it out... I knew I had to really pump my arms and increase my stride to catch up with her and I regret trying that now! Within about 10 steps of really gunning it (at cheetah speed)... unfortunately... I felt a familiar sharp pain in my hip again. Initially, it didn't hurt as bad as last week... but it was definitely not going away... even when I slowed it down to a regular run to get back to our starting position the pain was still there... Devin suggested that I modify the rest of bootcamp and do any other stationary activity (that didn't cause me discomfort) during the remaining sprints to avoid further injury... because it only hurts when I'm moving in forward motions. I modified my workout for the rest of the sprints and the forward lunges too... but it's weird... I could do a light run backwards with no problem at all... how bizarre!
I don't know where this competitive spirit in me has come from? Everyone that knows me well... has heard my story about winning the "most sportsmanlike" award in grade 9 (which is the only team I've ever been on). I pride myself on having a good time, making people laugh and just enjoying the moment. I've never consciously been like this before... where I needed to see if I could beat the fastest person... because honestly... in the past... I've just been happy when I'm wasn't last! But lately... I want to be first... I'm definitely paying the price for that new competitive spirit now!
When I got home, every step I took hurt... and climbing stairs can be summed up in three words... OUCH SHARP PAIN!
Devin said if I have any discomfort on Monday he wants me to stay on the bike again for another week! Really? *insert sad expression here* I'm going to ice my hip the rest of the weekend... since I use weekends as my recovery (even when I'm not hurt)... I won't be working out for 2 days... and hopefully the sharp pains will subside... or better yet disappear all together.
I can't wait to jog again... especially now that I have some new beats... my friend Peter made me a running CD... I listened to it tonight in the car and props to "Big Daddy Remix"... he did a great job... which surprises me because normally Peter's choice in music sucks!!! *hahaha just teasin' Sasha Fierce (Pete's old nickname)* The CD he created has tons of remix songs that I totally forgot that I loved years ago... it's like being in techno hip hop club... sampling of my favorite music with crazy fast beats! It's going to be fabulous to run too... I guess this recovery time will give me a few days to figure out how to convert the music on the mixed CD into iPod format!
Are my sprinting days over? That would bite... I just started to get really fast! Obviously... I'm getting old. *sigh*
