Giving props... where props are (over)due!

You've heard me praise Devin and my girlfriends at bootcamp for how they've helped me to become more healthy... but only those people closest to me know that my biggest supporter in changing my lifestyle has actually been my husband Gord.

To be honest, I've been so self-absorbed in the last year or more that it's only recently (like last week) that I realized how much Gord has had to endure in order for me to achieve my physical fitness goals.

In 2007, I wasn't happy with how I physically looked or felt. Gord said something to me that was a real wake-up call. He suggested that if I put even half the effort into my health that I did my web design business, that I wouldn't be out of shape. In his defense, he did say this with good intentions and in a supportive tone! Gord was completely right and this conversation is actually what kick-started my fitness regime.

My closest friends know that I probably have the worst case of undiagnosed OCD out there. I'll be the first to admit, that it takes a lot of patience to live with someone like me. I've always got some sort of obsession, and whatever it is, it consumes me. It just so happens that right now, I'm obsessed with my health. I'm a born-again health nut, I live and breath the topic of working-out and eating healthy. I think about it, most hours of the day. Obviously Gord is a very patient man, I'm lucky that he also has an interest in physical fitness otherwise our conversations would be limited to bills and kids!

Gord has made it completely possible for me to reach my goals. No matter what financial sacrifices we've had to make, from hiring a personal trainer or the additional cost associated to buying healthy foods and protein supplements, he hasn't complained about it.

He has also had to make difficult sacrifices with his free time so then I could work-out. I know that after a long day of work, coming home a couple nights a week to deal with our 4 year old twins on your own while your wife goes to bootcamp is rough (it sucks to be out-numbered), but I try my best to balance it out by letting him have football time on the weekends or playing the part of single parent myself on non-bootcamp evenings so he can work-out too.

If you are with someone that is trying to lose weight and they are having a hard time with it, to be frank, you may be part of the problem. Weight loss is hard work, but if the home environment is conducive and supportive, the likelihood of achieving the goal is more likely. I have a number of friends who are currently working hard to become more healthy, the people who have partners at home cooking healthy foods, encouraging them to take time out for themselves to exercise and celebrating their weight loss achievements are seeing amazing results.
